Data Installation

The download and extraction of the data set is handled by the app.

  1. Open the app and tap "Download Now". First time users will be asked to register.
  2. The app will start the download.
  3. The download is quite large. 882Mb (phone) or 975Mb (tablet).
  4. Leave your device to complete the download.
  5. Once the download is completed, the app with start the extraction process.
  6. You can choose to extract to the Internal Storage or External SDcard.
  7. When the extraction is completed, the app will restart.
  8. On most devices that app should automatically find the data extracted to internal storage. If you have extracted to external storage, use [Browse to data] –> mnt –> extsdcard to find the sa_birding folder.

Alternative method,

Please download the data from the Android Data Download page.

  1. The download is delivered as a zip file, 970MB for Phone or 1250MB for tablet.
  2. Once downloaded, double-click to extract to a folder on your computer.
  3. Copy the "sa_birding" folder to a storage location on your device, either Internal Storage or External SDcard.
  4. Run the Roberts Birds application on your Android Device.
  5. Next run the app again. It will automatically find the data extracted to internal storage. If you have extracted to external storage, use [Browse to data] –> mnt –> extsdcard to find the sa_birding folder.

If you have downloaded the Data Set using your Android device, please extract the data from the Zip file. You will need to install an extraction application to do this. There are several free extraction applications on Google Play.

Data missing after extraction

The solution is to delete the existing data that has partially extracted, make enough space available for the data to be fully extracted, and then run the extraction process again. Please do not interrupt the extraction process until it has completed.

  1. Using “My Files” (or similar file browsing system) locate the sa_birding folder.
  2. Delete the sa_birding folder.
  3. Ensure that your device has 1.2 GB of free space available to extract the data on a tablet, and 1GB on a phone.
  4. Run the Roberts app and press [Extract].
  5. If you do not have enough internal storage please select to extract to [External SD-card]. You need an SD-card inserted into your device to do this.
  6. Next run the app again. It will automatically find the data extracted to internal storage. If you have extracted to external storage, use [Browse to data] –> mnt –> extsdcard to find the sa_birding folder.

License check error after the device has worked for a while.

The app is designed to work offline but does require a Google License check every 30 days or so. This is a standard Play Store function. Please remember to run your device and app online before leaving on a trip to a remote area.

Using your Android phone as a Wi-Fi Hotspot

  2. Fist go into "Portable Wi-Fi hotspot settings".
  3. Go into "Configure Wi-Fi hotspot and not down the "Network SSID", Security type and Password (activate "show password" to see the password". You will need these settings for the tablet.
  4. Now turn on the hotspot.
  5. Now you can activate the Wi-Fi on your tablet and use the settings to connect to your phone.

Re-installing the Roberts App

The Google Play Store is the exclusive retailer of the app and all transactions are between you and the Play Store. Unfortunately we have absolutely no involvement or influence in this process.

For a guide on how to download previously purchased apps.

For a guide on how to recover a purchasing Gmail account.

Once you have access to the account, then you can add it to your phone. Then use the account to log into the Google Play Store, and you should be able to download the app without having to purchase it again. If you are unable to recover the purchasing Gmail account, then unfortunately you have lost your app and will be required to repurchase.

Current Known Issues

Please contact support@sabirding.co.za if you experience any problems with the app.
